This comic is rather humorous. If this had been the case, the story would be substantially happier at the end. It does pose and interesting question. Did Gatsby have any problems with law inforcement? How could he aviod detection when even Tom was able to find his trail and associations.
In response to Jason: Maybe because he had powerful and influential friends? Consider Wolfsheim. He fixed the World Series. He obviously has black hands. Tom Buchanan's friend who noticed the liquor sales in Gatsby's stores was frightened off by Wolfsheim. His friend knows something else that he doesn't dare to tell - maybe Wolfsheim threatens his career, or worse - his life?
